TheZINEsaurus Issue II.I. – On Spiders, Fear, and A Sense of Home

I’ve completed my copies for the fest on Saturday. And they’re collated [thanks, Mom, for the help!], and they’re stapled [thanks, Elisa, for the loan of the super-duper awesome big stapler!], and my zine-scene bag is packed.

Here’s a preview of the cover …On Spiders, Fear, and A Sense of Home

I am really proud of myself and excited about Saturday. I’ve got three complete zines: the issue from last year, the first issue from this year, and my first mini-zine. The mini-zine is a DIY Iron-On Transfer instruction booklet. It comes free with a purchase of the iron-on transfers that I created! I’ve got one “t-shirt” design at this time. I’m hoping to add a second design for Saturday. We’ll see if I get it done.

Either way, I am PROUD of myself for getting this done and putting myself out there in an official way with my art. Feels pretty good!

if you live anywhere close by and you’re out & about, DROP BY the ABQ Zine Fest 2012, this Saturday, October 6, at the Kosmos Cafe at the Factory on 5th, 1715 5th St NW, Albuquerque, NM.

Aside

My zine is listed on the tablers for the upcoming 2012 ABQ Zine Fest.

SOOOOOOOOOO cool to see the official-ness!

I can never remember how to spell committment. Oh. Apparently only one m. Comittment. Or one t. Commitment.

See? This is why I can’t ever remember how to spell it. To me, if you start off with two m’s, then you should end with two t’s. That shows commitment. Starting with two m’s and ending with only half the t’s see incomplete, somehow.

I am commited (SEE? – NO SENSE! it’s committed with two t’s) committed <sigh>

I have to go to work tonight.

I would rather stay home and work on my zine.

(committee.) <harumph> (just as I suspected…)

I’ve fully completed 22 pages + the front and back covers. I have 8 pages or so that I want to include.

I write big. (should it be “big-ly”? that sounds weird – I guess it needs a modifier)

My handwriting is big.

first cover of TheZINEsaurus

Image

this is the first cover of my zine, TheZINEsaurus, created last fall for the First Annual ABQ Zine Fest. I think it was October. For sure, 2011. Anyway, I had recently graduated from nursing school and was looking for my first job as an RN. A good friend of mine was participating in the fest (she writes a hot erotic zine) and so my husband & I went to the opening night gig. It was an awesome conglomeration of art and music and alternative thinking and all that kind of stuff that I’d really been missing in the analytic, science-based field of nursing. I was hooked.

I decided, on a whim, to participate in the 42 Hour Zine Challenge and make a zine that weekend. And this is the cover that resulted. I’ll be posting an excerpt soon-ish, so you can see what some of the inside is like.

So, at the end of the weekend, I read my zine aloud, in public. And I was thrilled to have my audience laugh when I made a joke and sigh when I made a poignant remark. My zine won the First Annual Bruce Springsteen Award.

the I.I award

I was really hooked then! And I already had tons of ideas for more zines that I wanted to make.

And then I got my first job as a nurse and all my energy has been tied up in my first year of literally holding peoples’ lives in my hands.

And now, as I realize that I MUST have something therapeutic for my soul, I am working on TheZINEsaurus II.I.

Feeding My Soul

Standard

It has recently come to my attention that I have not been feeding my soul.
That ends now.

So, I will work on my zine, TheZINEsaurus, as often as I can, and/or as often as I need. And I’ll produce a zine for consumption. And I’ll share some of it here. Periodically. Sporadically.
